Seeing Red at MoMA

Say the word “communism” and chances are most people will conjure images of the Soviet Union, the Cuban Missile Crisis, or Nikita Khrushchev banging his shoe at the United Nations. It is far less likely that anyone will recall the unassuming brick structure that stands on the corner of Forsyth and Broome Streets in downtown Manhattan, the site of some of the earliest socialist and communist meetings held in the United States (back in the 19th century). For artist Yevgeniy Fiks, however, this type of place has inspired works that examine the often overlooked history of communism in the West.

violence

In an international match in 2008, Portugal traveled to Brazil and got defeated by 6-2. In that game, Cristiano Ronaldo had a small fight and misunderstanding with Marcelo, with both players approaching their heads very close of each other. A few months later, Ronaldo and Marcelo would start training together in Real Madrid and some might even say they became best friends.

Art in the news

The Leicestershire based artist Shauna Richardson’s has crafted a very British contribution to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games called The Lionheart Project. She is known for a distinct body of work that she calls “Crochetdermy”—life-size, realistic, crotchet animal creations—and, after two years of work, has crafted three nine-metre-long lions out of 36 miles of Swaledale wool. Conceived as an interpretation of Richard the Lionheart’s coat of arms, and presented in the spirit of a medieval travelling menagerie show, the figures will tour the country in an illuminated glass case. The procession is scheduled to start the tour at Chatsworth on 1 May and arrive at the Natural History Museum in London in time for the games, having visited multiple venues and reaching an estimated audience of more than half a million people. The Lionheart Project is part of Artists Taking the Lead, a series of 12 public art commissions across the UK to celebrate the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. E.R.
